Four nine-year-old boys arrested for burglary spree in KZN
Authorities in KwaZulu-Natal are investigating a shocking burglary spree involving four boys, all around nine years old, who were arrested in Hazelmere on Thursday morning.
The minors were apprehended after a female resident caught them breaking into her home. She handed them over to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), who responded to the incident.
Preliminary investigations by RUSA link the boys to a series of break-ins in the area, targeting both private homes and tuckshops. Reported stolen items include mobile phones, sports shoes, cash, and electronics.
During questioning, the young suspects allegedly confessed to selling stolen goods to local buyers but were reluctant to take full responsibility, instead blaming one another for the offences.
The arrests have sparked concern among Hazelmere residents, who are calling for stronger community vigilance as well as intervention programmes to address youth involvement in crime.
Authorities are now working to determine the full extent of the children’s activities and whether others may have been involved. Details about their identities and legal proceedings have not been disclosed, in line with child protection laws.
