Youth Unemployment in South Africa Rises to 4.9 Million, NYDA CEO Highlights Challenges and Opportunities

Young people remain the most vulnerable group in South Africa’s labor market, with the number of unemployed youths increasing by 39,000 to a staggering 4.9 million, according to the latest data. Ndumiso Kubheka, CEO of the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), shared insights on this worrying trend and discussed possible pathways forward.

The Reality Behind Youth Unemployment

Kubheka noted that unemployment risk decreases with age, suggesting that work experience plays a significant role in securing jobs. He also pointed out a strong correlation between education level and employment, highlighting that graduate unemployment remains lower than for those with only a matric or less. This underscores the importance of skills and education in improving youth employability.

Skills Gaps and Sector Opportunities

The average age of farmers and artisans in South Africa is above 55 years, raising questions about youth participation in these vital sectors. Kubheka stressed that infrastructure development projects, such as road building, electrification, and plumbing—bolstered by government allocations—could offer significant employment opportunities for young people. He emphasized the need to broaden the understanding of employability beyond office jobs to include these critical sectors.

Addressing Youth Disappointment and Unlocking Potential

Despite challenges, Kubheka expressed optimism about South Africa’s economic prospects, including growth in the formal sector and a dynamic informal economy where young people actively participate. He highlighted opportunities within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region as trade integration and market openings increase, providing a fertile ground for young entrepreneurs and workers.

NYDA’s Role in Creating Pathways to Employment

The NYDA is focused on creating clear exit pathways from training to employment. Kubheka acknowledged past shortcomings where training did not always lead to jobs and emphasized the agency’s renewed strategy to align training with sectors that can realistically absorb young workers. The agency also prioritizes enhancing South Africa’s economic competitiveness to stimulate value creation and sustainable job growth.

South Africa’s youth unemployment crisis remains a critical challenge, but with strategic interventions and targeted support, there are opportunities to change the trajectory for young South Africans and build a more inclusive economy.
